Oh my god, you guys: It just doesn't get any better than this. You will never find this place unless you know where it is because it's in the back of jewelry store. Yes, you heard me, it's in the back of a jewelry store. There's just a small sign outside that says "Saigon Bakery". Step inside to find the best sandwich of your life.
Walk past a couple of glass cases filled with stones and necklaces and you will see a small wooden counter. There are some prepared salads (papaya with shrimp, etc., all delicious), but you're here for the sandwich. Get the Number 1. It's the classic Vietnamese Banh Mi: barbequed pork, pork pate, daikon radish, cucumber, carrot, chili oil, and tons of cilantro. Not to mention all the spices. And the coup d'grace? It's served on a piping hot baguette. (This is where we thank the French for colonizing Vietnam.)
The sandwich is a perfect balance of flavors and mouth-feels: sweet, sour, salty, savory, spicy. It is ungodly good. It's also enormous and, at $3.75, brings new meaning to the phrase bargain lunch. Go. Now. Banh Mi Saigon Bakery: 138-01 Mott Street, just south of Grand.
