Season's Greetings, Food Finders! It is my pleasure to report on the entry of a daring newcomer to the lunch cart market. Healthy Food Vegetable, a two-men-in-a-van operation on Front Street in lower Manhattan doles out cheap and delicious vegetarian fare to health-conscious downtown professionals. The two friendly Mexican brothers who man the red van make the food fresh every day. Start your morning with a delicious pint of oatmeal - apple-raisin or banana-raisin, your choice - and cheap at only two dollars (American). The raisins are always plump and juicy, and the apples and bananas ripe as daybreak. Equally verdant is the topping of seasonal fruit that livens the meal. What tasty treat will the smiling immigrants gently place upon your oatmeal? Will it be ruby-red strawberries today, or perhaps sweet papaya? Or will summer peaches make an appearance, their skin bursting with dewy tears? Finish the job with a splash of milk and a dash of cinnamon, and feel your belly warm.
Now it's lunch time! Five dollars gets you four choices and a soup. One extra dollar makes it an all you can eat fiesta! And those choices, friends, oh, those choices. To name just three: soft tofu heavily seasoned with tumeric and tossed with crisp cabbage; vegetarian chili, hearty as shepherd's pie and packed with tomatoes and onions; and, the chef's special: veggie burgers - power-packed patties loaded with brown rice, soy protein, and lentils.
So eat to your heart's content, food lovers! It's delicious and healthy when you visit the men with the van.
